Hormones - Androgens or androgenic hormones, such as
testosterone, are a major component of sex drive. Levels decline
about 1 percent each year in men and also decline in women as they
age. This can lead to a decrease in sex drive for both.
Replacement of androgens can be helpful in age related sexual
dysfunction. Testosterone is available by prescription only. Over
the counter hormones, such as DHEA, converts into testosterone and
thus increase sex drive. Pregnenolone is another over the counter
hormone that may increase testosterone levels and thus enhance sex
drive.

thought to be a common cause of male erectile dysfunction. Penile
injury, surgery and scrotal damage can also affect genital blood
flow and reduce fertility. Not as well known is that
Arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), high cholesterol,
hypertension, or diabetes can drastically shape your sex life.
Vascular health is important! Keeping your blood flowing is not
only necessary for good sex – Your life depends on it!

Your
Nervous System - Disorders such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis,
Parkinson’s disease, and stroke can cause neurological damage that
affects the brain’s ability to respond to sexual stimulation. In
women, abdominal or pelvic operations can occasionally lead to nerve
damage. Sexual dysfunction is common in men undergoing surgical
treatment for prostate enlargement or cancer.

Your
Chemistry - Brain chemicals control your sexual response,
altering your brain chemistry can alter your sexual response.
Dopamine is a brain chemical that is very important for pleasure and
reward. An increase in dopamine may enhance the sexual response and
blocking it may lessen it.
Serotonin
is also significant for feelings and emotion. Low serotonin levels
can lead to depression and other conditions. Other chemicals involved
in the human sexual response and sex drive include acetylcholine, and
nitric oxide.

Choices
that Can Make a Difference
A
person wanting to enhance sexual performance
or enjoyment has many
confusing options to choose from. "More
and more people are turning to complimentary and alternative
treatments for sexual dysfunction," says Richard P. Brown, MD,
associate professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University in
New York City.
"While
Viagra has definitely revolutionized the treatment of erectile
dysfunction, it doesn't help libido and often has only modest
orgasmic quality. So people are looking elsewhere."
Since we focus
only on serious nutrition and health issues we won’t even comment
on the many “snake oil” products that promise to grow certain
body parts “bigger” or “longer”.
With
so many choices you are probably wondering, “Are all herbal sex
pills similar? Do any of them really work? Well according to Dr.
Ray Sahelian, and Chris Kilham they do!
